From: Peter Clement
Brian, In doing a search for "Nachshen", besides your brother's company and the US Air Force (Michael N. is a Lieutenant) and some scientific papers and stuff from probably Danny and Judy, and your home page, up came this entry! Where is Avrum when we need him. he could have told us who she is. Her age could make her a daughter of one of Zaide' brothers or she could be Zaide's sister or even Mutzi's wife? Anyone have any ideas? Glenn, might your dad or Izzie know? Is Izzie on e-mail yet? So, Brian what's the address of the NFC home page?

I'm ahead of you here. I found a book (The Way of All Flesh)
with illustrations by Donia Nachshen nearly thirty years ago.
I wrote someone, Issie I think, but never heard back. I've come
across a few more mystery Nachshens over the years, too.

Subject: Re: Donia Nachshen

There is a whole family of Nachshens in New York and New Jersey. I spoke to one of them, a lawyer named Sandra Nachshen in northern New Jersey, last year, but she didn't know that much about the family background. (She's about 30.) She did tell me that the senior generation, now in their 80s, consists of three brothers named Joseph, Louis, and Samuel(!) They live in the Bronx, and they came to the U.S. early in the century. She thinks they're from the Ukraine. Julie pulled all their addresses and telephone numbers off the computer last week, and she can send them to you if you want them. Sandra didn't seem too interested in following up on any possible family connection when I spoke to her (she struck me as much more assimilated than we are), but I would heartily encourage Issie, Peter, or you to pursue this, perhaps with one of the more senior members of their family. As you are well aware of my computer literacy limitations, I would ask if you could pass this message along to Peter and anyone else you think would be interested. Happy Hunting, and Happy New Year.

Mazel Tov to all!! Bev and Peter are thrilled to announce and welcome their fourth ainicle to life on earth.Wow!!! The latest addition to the Nachshen Family Circle is a healthy baby boy, Kynan (rhymes with (sky-man) weighing in at just over 7 pounds. He arrived on Saturday January 4 to his mother, Bronwen (who is in India!! with husband Todd and number one son, Gaelan, 20.5 months old) Bronwen spent 3 hours in labour, with Todd at her side, while Bubbie Bev (in India for the occasion) looked after Gaelan, who was fast asleep at the time. Mom and new son were brought home from the hospital by Todd within a few hours of the birth. According to Bev, the little baby looks like Bronnie did when she was born. Everyone is doing well. I am expecting them back in Canada at the end of this month. Love and Wow! Peter

First visit to the new web sight tonite & it looks great ! Congrats ! Minor corrections to the Mintzie version of the Family tree - Franci is not spelled with an "E" at the end; my bride was born in Saranac Lake, N.Y. (although spent her formative years in frigid Winnipeg). Unfortunately, you were exactly correct on the date of birth ! We will keep visiting the sight and will contribute whenever possible. A rabbinic midrash of Nachshon ben Aminadav, prince of Juda... Moses, before the seas will part, needs some brave soul to enter the raging (?) waters. Nachshon enters the water. He goes in up to his belly, no parting...up to his neck... no parting. He had faith, he believed, so he goes up to his nose, takes his last breath before submering totally and at that point the waters part. This was told to me by Reb Mordechai Wosk. News: Melanie spent two weeks in Texas with Shari and James and her new cousin. She left Vancouver the 26th with my winter boots and gloves because it was freezing down there. Well.....you know what happened here..we got snowed in and in Texas mid 70's and sun. The boots stayed in the suitcase and my sneakers got a mid-winter workout. All is well here. Congratulations on a very impressive website and for saving me all of the headaches of creating it myself. This is a wonderful tool to keep in touch with everyone everywhere everyday!!

By the way, Brian, please add my finacee, Judy Hagshi, born 28 OCT 70 in Toronto, to the tree. You can put our wedding date only after we're married though, so please wait for the invite!! She's so superstitious. You know the way Morrocan's are!!

I just returned last night from a fantastic trip to Basel, Switzerland (where Herzl held the 1st Zionist conference 100 years ago and declared his vision of a Jewish Homeland) and Israel.

1) do you think the "mail" and "news" should be one page?
2) the choices you have at the bottom of each page, could they be put vertically on the left hand side.?
3) did I tell you how great I think the page is? I'm still excited about it. You've started a phenomenon as significant as the creation of the NFC itself. I mean it. Peter

Reply From: Brian
1) That's probably a good idea. Less confusing. (We all know Nachshens are slow-witted.) I'll work on it.
2) I've been thinking about "frames". (I have to learn them.) Then there could be an index always visible. But I think it would be better at the bottom of the page because the trees are so wide and I wanted them to be completely visible on one page without having to scroll. But sometimes I think frames just clutter the screen. I'll think about it. Maybe we could vote.
3) Yes you did and I appreciate it. Maybe it's as significant as the creation of the Nachshens themselves. Ha ha.

OK, first of all, GREAT JOB, good initiative setting this up. BUT please spell my mother's name right, as we all know it isn't smart to get on her bad side (she has other sides?) it is spelt MINTZY, no i at the end, no e at the end just, MINTZY. There I feel much better now. (There is a zy in both first and last names for my mom). BUH BYE - PR BTW : Sending from where this is (at the bottom of the news page doesn't work, it can't find news.htm)

Reply: Actually, Steven (er..I mean Stephen) I was just testing you. No, but seriously, with a name like Sk..etc, I thought spelling Mintzy wrong would be a nice change. As for the 2nd problem, it's been fixed.

N.G.S.B - that's Nachshen/Garber/Skolnick/Braendel.

Man 'o man. What an incredible web site, Brian. I feel so grateful to be part of this family. You've done an incredible job. In the years that our elders began the Nachshen Family Circle, I know they never began to imagine computers and web sites and the internet. They thought about keeping us all in touch. They wanted to keep the love and connections alive. With so many years gone by, many of us have moved to different parts of the world, and a regular meeting, that includes everyone, is no longer possible. But now, my dear cousin Tsini, you have brought us back together. You have picked up where our parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, great uncles and aunts began. You have breathed life back into our Family Circle. Once again, we can tell each other how we are, how we feel, what we're doing. Here we have an opportunity that we've never before had. I thank you with my heart, my cousin, for bringing back into reach, the family members for whom I hold great esteem and love. Your long hours of work and the love and pride you have for our family are totally and gratefully appreciated. Swimming through this web site has brought back so many memories. I remember seders, and family meetings. Purim parties and the funny costumes and the skits. Remember the beatles wigs? There's a picture somewhere of that purim party. I think Silka may have it. I remember "bragging" to my friends, when I was young. "I have the best and biggest family. We're Jewish, and we have a Family Circle. The adults get together all the time, and there are parties and get togethers for the kids. They were impressed! And now, I'm not so young anymore, and I can't wait to show this web site to my friends, and brag about how wonderful our family is. Who remembers the family get together when the kids went fishing? I think we may have been at Beaver Lake on Mount Royal. One of George and Phyllis' sons (Glen?) caught a fish. I was so envious. Or maybe it wasn't Beaver Lake, maybe it was at Ile St. Helen, where we had a family picnic. Does anyone remember more details?

Once again, this is great, Brian! I especially loved the archive pictures and the "news and mail".

Love to all of you. If I know you well, lets "talk". If I don't know you well, I'd love to get to know you.

Brian - here's a suggestion: How about each person doing a mini (or maxi) biography. Then we can get to know each other a little better. I have cousins whom I've met, but know very little about their families and lives. Could we organized something to "introduce" ourselves and our immediate families?

Love,

Rhonda/Ronnie/Ruchele rbraende@sfu.ca

From: Anne Nachshen

We got home at midnight last night, and I was checking out the Web Page at 7.30 this morning. I can't believe how much progress you've made in two weeks. It's really fabulous. I especially enjoyed the old NFC minutes - I hope some more of them turn up. We had a mini NFC meeting in Fla. - dinner with Bess and Bob, Kate and Joe, and Phyllis and George. We were trying to tell them what's going on in Cyberspace, and they of course would love to see everything that we can access at the touch of a mouse, but unless someone in their branch prints it out for them, they, and others in the family who don't have computers are going to be left out. I'll pass everything on to the "Larry" branch, and we'll have to hope that the other branches do what they have to do as well. Bess said she has some old photos and information and will send it to me and I'll send it on to you, but they're in Fla. until April. Im having some problems and I have some questions which maybe some of the other amateurs are having as well, so maybe you can help. Maybe it's my computer, but I don't get about 25% of the picture on my screen, and making it smaller doesn't make any difference. For example, I can just see "CI" of the word Circle in the title, and nothing to the right. On the Family Tree, I get nothing to the right of "Gri", and also miss a lot of the individual Family Trees. Next problem - when I print out a Family Tree, I get a very garbled and unreadable version of the actual tree at the top, but the printer very cleverly prints out all the names and dates which I don't even see on the screen. Questions - how can I print just the new additions to "News" without printing out all the old news which I already have? Do I have to turn off the printer part way through? - Do I have to stay online while I'm printing, or is there a way to transfer everything on the site, and then print it offline? Once again, our kudos to add to all the rest. You must be putting in many, many hours on this, and how it all works is a total mystery to us.
Love, Anne
Now I've got to go and unpack.

Reply: Regarding your problems, without seing your computer I can't be sure what's causing your problems but, most likely, it's because you're not using Netscape. Although Internet Explorer probably works fine, too, I highly recomend everyone use Netscape 2 or 3. As far as I'm concerned it's the standard and I don't check to see how the pages work with any other browsers.

To print just the latest news use your mouse to select the text you want, hit CONTROL and "C" (this copies the selected text) and then File, Print, Print Selection. If your browser doesn't have these print options you'll need to open Notepad (or any editor) and Paste the text you've just selected into it and print from there.

You can go offline to print the pages on your screen. Your browser should have saved at least the last few pages you've looked at.

There was a meeting of most of the "first cousins" in Montreal a few months ago. It was decided that we need to rebuild the NFC pishka. The pishka will cover expenses for sending out the family circle cards, printing haggadot for Pesach, putting on the annual NFC summer barbecue, and any other activities that we may have.

The following was agreed upon:

-- All nuclear family units will pay $25. (A "nuclear family unit" is based on having a different address than anyone else. Full-time students are exempt.)

-- Non-Montreal resident family units may choose to pay $10 per family unit if they feel that they do not benefit from the activities.

-- All money should be sent to Mintzy Clement at 40 Alexis Rd, Thornhill, Ontario, L3T 6Z9

The West Coast mini-NFC meeting took place at Ronnie's. Melanie, Ian, Ronnie, Brian, Peter and Ronnie's 19 animals were there. A medal was presented to Brian on behalf of the entire family for launching the NFC Web Page. Brian was moved and gave a heartfelt acceptance speech. A wonderful meal prepared by Ronnie was followed by a heated diction discussion wherein Ronnie informed us that we are all pronouncing words with "ng" incorrectly. If you want to know how to properly pronounce "think" "sing" "hanger" just remember how Ricki Ricardo would say it.

I am just blown away by our family's homepage! I just logged on for the first time today I'm not gonna say what a great design it is, how proud I am to be a part of the family, and what an important thing it is you've done because others have already said that far better than I could ever say it myself. However, I will say that I'm really excited by it because it helps those of us who are geographically separated from the main "hubs" of Nachshen activity keep on top of things.

For those who are interested, this is what's been happening in the great country of Texas, San Antonio detachment, of the NFC:

* I recently spent three months at the Defense Information School, in Ft. Meade, Maryland. It was close to home, so I got a chance to see Judy & Gary quite frequently. * Now I'm back at work--- I'm super busy, but I wouldn't have it any other way * Judy and Gary are currently on Sabbatical in Israel right now they're having a great time and enjoying the slow pace of life over there * I volunteered to serve as a layleader for Kelly Air Force Base, which means that I advise the Chaplain (and anybody else who asks) on issues that concern the Jewish troops. * Saul is heading into his second semester as a sophomore at Antioch College

Hopefully I'll see you at Pesach

Love to all my relatives who read this

Hi y'all from the Fort Worth branch! Our weather has been jumping from the 20's to the 70's (F), we never know what tomorrow will be like. We actually had snow a couple of times. Would you believe I have only been away for a 1 1/2 years & I already miss the snow. Our precious daughter Katie Fera is now 10 weeks old and has a truly sweet personalty. On her two month visit with the Dr. she had doubled her weight to 15lbs 7 oz and grown 5 inches to 25 in. She's solid! We're all looking forward to seeing everyone at the seder. It's been tough meeting people here so if anyone knows people out this way give me their number or give them ours, I could really use some friends. Hi cousins, aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles, sister, brother in law, mother, cousins once removed, cousins twice removed, 2nd cousins, third cousins (did I leave anyone out?)

I'm sitting here on a quiet evening Melanie is out, and I'm eating something for dinner that she wouldn't look at, and so I rarely get to eat - gepareteh (keparateh?) matzo. In English, that's soggy crackers with butter, salt and pepper. Mmmm. Who else likes this stuff? My friends (and my daughter) don't believe me when I say it's delicious. Anyways, while I'm eating, I'm thinking, what I really want is a good piece of mandel broit. But the only thing close to that in Aldergrove is biscotti, and that's not IT. Anybody got a good recipe. I don't have Bubby Fera's and as far as I'm concerned, she made the best. What do you think of the idea of a NFC cookbook/storybook? We could combine the wonderful things Brian is organizing with our favourite recipes (our parents', grandparents' and our own recipes). What do you think. I would be more than happy to nominate my mother (Elka) to put this all together, as she is the recipe QUEEN. Just kidding. I'd be very happy to have the opportunity to work on such a project. Let me know what your ideas are, and also please submit recipes and stories for us to get started with.

For the record: Hebonics - Jewish English - which Peter Clement speaks EXTREMELY well, calls for hard "NG"s. So if you say "sing" in Hebonics, you pronounce the "g". HOWEVER, as much as Peter Clement does not wish to recognize the correct Canadian/American/British pronunciation, he will have to take his head out of Yiddish clouds and leave the "g" off the end of words ending in "ng". He conceded a bit, and now wishes to speak like Ricky Ricardo, and pronounce the "ng" with an an "n" in the front of the mouth like in "noon" instead of the "n" in the back of the mouth like in "hang". Everyones' opinion on this important matter is requested.

By the way, in case nobody else caught it, the correct spelling of Nachshen (this could be tricky spelling it in Hebrew with only English letters)is:

Nun - Chet -Shi'in - Vav - Nun (sofit).

If you don't understand that we'll figure another way to spell it for you.

I've copied this to IN for verification purposes, but after 13 years in Hebrew school, 10 trips to Israel, and Bar Mitzvah money still earning interest, I think I can spell my name!!

Please advise.

Reply: I was afraid of this. Actually, Peter already pointed out my spelling mistake but, you see, I only got about 80 bucks Bar Mitzvah loot. And I never graduated from the Talmud Torah. And when everyone was going to Israel I took into my head to go to Cuba, where Hebrew's about as popular as English in a Caisse Populaire lunchroom.I got the spelling from a faded newspaper clipping under a picture of my Uncle Avrumand not all the letters were too clear. I will fix this soon as I find my old Talmud Torah primer, which I still have here somewhere. My apologies. -Tzini

Re: Letter from Ronnie

I think Ronnie's NFC cookbook idea's great. C'mon, start sending those recipes in! I'm going to start things off by posting a brief exchange of letters the Clements and I had recently concerning who made the best latkes. So take a look here. By the way, as I mention, Polly had no recipes. To learn how to make any of her wonderful dishes I'd have to get her to make them while I took notes. When she no longer had a kitchen she'd make the dishes mentally. I may have to tape her doing this and post her recipes as sound files

Also, on the Table of Contents page there's a link for the Jewish Holiday Kitchen and, also, if you use HotBot and type in the name of any dish you'll come up with many wonderful recipes. Throw out your cookbooks! There are also a number of great cooking newsgroups.

I read the Latke Letters (I think that would be a good name for our book. and I could actually 'hear' the voices of the authors. It was as if we were all sitting around a table again, coffee, tea and food all over. There are the crumpled napkins, broken cookies, half eaten pieces of cake. Can you see them? Someone's mother says "enough, already", finish the cake, or it'll get dry". Someone else inquires, "Dry?" Did you see the sale at the Hudon's Bay?" Another voice, "voose for a sale?" Then maybe Silka says, "I found the BEST place for buying blouses. At least half price". Then a discussion about the best places to buy blouses, shoes, and of course, purses - leather. This discussion is not completed because one of the kids come in crying. Fell down. Lots of hugs, kisses, and three new discussions at the same time about a variety of interests. Did you ever sit back and play the game of trying to follow all the conversations at one time? I remember it getting confusing because quite often one person could be in more than one conversation, and it was hard to tell which one they were talking in. (Can a person "talk in" a conversation?"

Thanks again Tzini, for bringing these memories to life.

(to be spoken to the cadence and cubanics of Ricky Ricard: as in "loooosssie..." Ronnnnnie: jhou are makin me maaaaaad!

Some of you may wonder why there are so many silent consonants in English, (e.g. fight, talk, thought). Well, when Gutenburg invented the printing press, the SPELLING of words stopped evolving and changing, but the pronounciation continued to evolve. Thus, once can conclude that all the now silent consonants were actually correctly pronounced. There fore, (using Gresha's logic), it is proper to pronounce the consonants. Therefore, Ronnie, you are wrong. "Sing" is said as it's spelled even in Englishenglish. unless you want us to all sound like Ricky R. respectfully Peter

Tzini, I am speechless. This is more than terrific, wonderful and absolutely great. I just cant find the words to express how I feel about this. I just found the site yesterday. I have been sitting here and reading all the mail. It brought me to tears. I am so glad you are so brilliant and came up with this wonderful idea.

I love the minutes of the early family meetings. I am sure someone must have some more of those lying around.

I was secretary one year. I would look in the attic (isn't that where all family treasures are kept?}but I don't have one. I will do a search tho and see if I can come up with anything.

I think news and mail is great. What a way to keep up with family news.

The cookbook is also a brainstorm. I wrote a note yesterday, but forgot to enclose the recipe. This will follow.

Max and I just came back from a cruise. It was wonderful. I never wanted to take a cruise, now I wonder why. Next to Israel it was the best vacation ever.

Shari is coming to visit tomorrow and I can't wait to see my new grandaughter. I did see her when she was born but she is almost 3 months now and Shari says "you will freak out when you see her".

Love to all NFC members

It is such a shame that two cousins in the NFC should have a fight over the internet. What (vat) can I tell you? Peter, my dear cousin, If today, was the day of Guttenberg, which, by all my calculations, it isn't, then yes, you may want to pronounce all the consonants. However, since I have so much respect for you, my elder, I did some research. the book "Fundamentals of Voice and Diction", Fourth Edition, by Lyle V. Mayer, Wm. C. Brown Company Publishers, Dubuque Iowa, 1974 (a little closer the the time you spoke of) dedicates over 7 pages the this particular speech difficuly:

If you say stinger and linger you will not that the 'ng' is not pronounced the same in both words. "Stinger" is pronouned "sting-er". The 'n' is simply the nasal sound. There is no plosive 'hard g' in the word. "Linger", however is pronounced "ling-ger". Here the 'ng' represents a combination of the nasal n and the plosive g.

No wonder, then, that we occasionally have trouble with 'ng'. Once again we might note that English spelling is of very little help. To add to the confusion, in certain foreign languagues and dialects 'n' is almost invariable followed by a 'g' or a 'k'. Thus, individuals whose language background includes Yiddish, Slavic, Spanish, Hungarian, or Italian, even though the speaker may be native born, are often prone to add teh so-called "ng-click". Charactereisticaaly, "sing" then becomes "sing-g" or "sing-k" and "hang" becomes "hang-g" or "hang-k".

Following this passage is some help. I thought you might like to practice:

How can the 'hard g' be eliminated? Your sense of hearing and feeling will help. You will remember that the back of the tongue is raised against the velum or soft palate to make "ng". If you will say "sing" you will be able to feel the contact.

Say "sing" again, but this time, listen quite carefully to the nasal sound, prolong it slightly, and as you are prolonging the "ng", pull your tongue away from the velum. If this is done, you will not add the "hard g".

Read the following with exaggerated slowness, always prolonging the "ng". Pull the tongue away from the velum during the production of the nasal rather than after, and you will probably be able to eliminate the after-click.

Peter, if you would like some exercises to practice with, I can send them to you.

I hope this helps.

Oh, just a last note about pronouncing "ng" as an "n" at the front of the mouth like the word "noon", the author says the following:

The individual who says: "As I was standin' on the corner, I saw the mob comin'... is gulty of a very common fault..... Those who insiste on saying: comin', goin', thinkin'.... will generally attract the wrong kind of attention to their speech, not to mention unfavorable criticism. College graduate job-seekers, otherwise well qualified, have been rejected in interviews because their speech was marred by this particular manerism.

Case closed.

And finally, a little son' for you:

Peter, Peter, I'm so sad
to hear that you're getting so so mad
I never meant to be so bad
Forgive me please,
I'll be so very very glad.

Love, Rucheleh

That cookbook is so funny I just platzed while reading it. The Latke Letters are hilarious. But Elka's recipe where she leaves out the recipe cracked me up for 10 minutes. Yes, Abie had good taste, 'cause Fera's borscht was an incomparable highlight of Pesach. Let's have that recipe, Ellie!

Hey, couldn't someone give their old computer to the New York cousins, so they could join us!

Reply: The recipe has arrived! Have a look.

February 6 marked my grandfather's (Avrum Nachshen Z"L) 101st anniversary of his birth in Pogrebische. Although he has been gone for 13 years, his memory, and that of his departed brothers and sisters, lives on each day in our hearts and in our minds. I am sure that they are all looking down from above with great big Nachshen smiles seeing how all of their descendants are still connected as in yesteryear. Happy Birthday "Big Z" (That was our Zaiyda's affectionate nickname).

Katie & I have returned from Montreal where there were mountains of snow. Living where the weather has gone in the 80's (just two weekends ago) I realized I miss the snow. It actually felt great to see all the of snow everywhere. Much to my surprise, since I always wanted out of the cold. Even the cold wasn't a problem for me but Katie had a major problem with being bundled up all the time. It was great being at "home" and showing Katie off to as many people as time would allow. James, Katie & I will be in Montreal for pesach and look forward to seeing everyone.

Hi guys. I'm in L.A. this weekend visiting my aunt. I was just showing my cousin Nathan the website and he was very impressed. He's a big city lawyer and has offered to negotiate big contracts with companies who want to use this family tree as entertainment.

Ciao

Reply: Maybe too late. I'm talkin' to Disney. Also, Air Canada wants to offer this page as their in-flight magazine. -Tzini

Subject: Polly's Birthday!

This coming Saturday, March 1st, Polly will be celebrating her 90th birthday.
As you know, Polly is our premier elder, the head of the family, the Matriarch,
and one of only two in our family of her generation left to us so Saturday will
be a very special day for all of us to celebrate with her.

Hi Brian

I read sometime ago the eulogy to JN but have not found the time to EMAil until now. The interest is that I am part of the NACHSHEN family from Russia that settled in UK at the turn of the century. Much of the Eulogy reminded me of my own Grandfather, Maurice Nachshen 1899-1977. I wonder if the two Nachshens were related - perhaps you / Gary could write with more information and I will try and do the same.

Please EMail me - ainleys@aol.com

Note: All letters ensuing from the above, concerning the UK/Israel/USA Nachshens and our possible connection, are in a seperate page: The Nachshen/Nachshen Letters.
