PICNIC TIME Thu Jul 30 09:55:59 1998 The annual Nachshen Family Picnic to be held at Paradise Falls (Silka & Al's up "norf" house) will be held on Saturday August 15th (which just happens to be Mintzy & Rafi's 28th anniversary) Come one, come all See you there! Brian Mintzy wrote: will be held on Saturday August 15th (which just happens to be Mintzy & Rafi's 28th anniversary) Mintzy, you're my baby cousin - I remember the day you were born - I'm just a kid, myself - so how could you possibly have been married for 28 years??? You made a mistake. Check again. -Brian baby cousin it's okay Brian - I was only 6 years old when I got married. Brian Ahhhh . . . I guess that would explain why your kids are older than you are . . . Jack Clement This is Peter typing for J.C. who is dictating: Hi Everyone, I'm here in Procter visiting my son, daughter-in-law, 2 granddaughters, 2 grandsons-in-law, and 4 great grandchildren. eat your hearts out! love, Jack And by the way, Kaitlyn Bronwen Foot will, in my opinion, be one of the most intelligent people any of you will ever meet by the time she's 25-30. Mark my words. If not, I'll come back and apologize to all of you. Jack Clement Stephen S Skrzydlo
Well, I've been playing with my new scanner, so when our dear cousin Gadi came to stay with us (he's here for a week, he'll be in Montreal with my parents this weekend) and brought some pictures I dutifully offered to send them to you and hopefully you'll post them on the sight, so here they are, straight from Israel. They are pictures of young Omer (3) along with his mommy and the new baby. Mike Nachshen
Hi Gang Please note my new email address -- Nachshen@hotmail.com Also, I just got back from the Information Warfare Applications Course at Maxwell Air Force Base. One of the things we discussed was web site security. I thought I'd share some information with you.: Using much of the information available on the web, almost anyone can "steal" a person's identity, and use the identity to get credit cards, open up a bank account, take out a loan, etc... Let me give you an example, without getting too much into the specifics: Say I'm a bad guy and I want to open up a line of credit in your name. If you're an American, and the credit card company is based in the US, all I need is a street address, a social security number, a telephone number, and I need to know your mother's maiden name. It's fairly easy to get a street address and a telephone number. For about $400 US, I can learn your social security number (there are plenty of companies that will sell me that information). Then, all I need is your mother's maiden name (which I can get courtesy of the NFC web site) and I'm good to go. Of course, it's a bit more involved then that, but stealing someone's identity does not take a rocket scientist. I'm not trying to alarm people -- if it hasn't happened yet, it's probably not going to happen in the next few hours. But it can happen. I've seen it with my own eyes. The point I'm trying to make is that some of the information on the site can be used for unsavory purposes -- mainly, the family database. I don't think we should take the database down -- it's a handy cheat sheet to use before big family gatherings. However, password protecting the database may be a smart solution. Am I off the wall? (well I'm a Nachshen, so of course I'm a little Meshugah). But I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on this. Mike Nachshen Nachshen@hotmail.com A Guest Yesterday was the annual Nachshen Family Circle barbeque at Silka and Al's country "paradise". Despite rain on and off, a wonderful time was had by all. The new swimming pool was enjoyed by Melanie (here from Vancouver), Lexie, Matty, Gil, 2 Danielles, Matthew, soon to be Bar Mitzvahed Brandon, and the big kids - Ronny and Al. Present were - host and hostess Silka and Al, Mandi, Ronny, Lexie, Matty, Frank, Zohar, Gil and Danielle, Ellie, Max and Melanie, Issie, Kate, Joe, Steve, Lise, Lise's mother, Brandon and Matthew, George, Phyllis, Barry, Franci, Danielle, Glenn and Judy, Sam and Anne, Larry, Margaret, and Mark with Rachel from Australia. There are some excellent sets of lungs among the Nachshens, as evidenced by the screams of joy coming from the swimming pool, and from Mandi as she herded everyone together for a family photo. Among the dining delights were hot dogs and chicken burgers, corn on the cob, delicious salads from Silka, Mandi and Margaret, and Anne's famous brownies which disappeared in about 2 seconds. As always, Silka and Al were outstanding hosts, and we thank them for all the time and energy they put into the party. Issie N. It was wonderful, especially seeing all the kids rain or shine we go on...forever....regards to all Loce, I>N> Judy and Glenn A great big thanks and yasher choach to the host and hostess with the mostest: Alex Farrel and his lovely wife Silka. Love, Dr. Judy and Councillor Glenn absent but still
a nudnik let's see the group photo put up on our page, and please send some brownies. I'll pass them around to everyone up here.(really!) love, Peter what's with the
aliases? Yes! Send some pictures immediately. (They will be returned.) If no one took pictures (shame!) then just send the brownies. If there are none left (shame!) send pictures of the brownies. If you need my mailing address, send me an email. Brian Mischa Well hello there! This is Mischa. Long time no write eh? I am writing all of you one letter so that I will not be on this machine until the next millennium. First of all I hope that everyone has had a wonderfully warm and beautiful summer. I had a wonderful summer travelling through Europe and visiting my dear family in Hamburg. Quick Summary: My summer started off with a one week stay/recuperation at the Casa de Clement before heading off to Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. First stop was Munich in Bavaria. A charming city where I met 3 girls from Michigan who became very dear friends of mine, and home of the beer hall! I also visited the sad Dachau concentration Camp, which brought tears to my eyes and a feeling of disgust and disbelief that humans can be so cruel. Second stop was Salzburg Austria, the home of Mozart, and the largest intact Roman fortress in Europe. A wonderfully beautiful and relaxing city filled with so much to see and history. One of my favourites! Then I was off to Innsbruck nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, and home of two winter Olympic games. I took a magnificent cable car ride to one of the highest peaks, and was struck with awe at the beauty and immensity of the Alps. Liechtenstein! The friendly small country, very small country, where I spent the day exploring the royal parks (And trying to get into the castle.) and enjoying the sun!, Then off to non eventful Zurich. Not too exciting, but really expensive :) Feeling like I wanted a real bed, and eager to be with my family during their summer holiday (Which is absurdly short) I headed back to Hamburg Germany for two fun filled weeks with Philip, Gabi, Elisha, and Mara. We had such a wonderful time playing, laughing, swimming, camping, getting stung by some huge insect and ballooning up like a tomato and breaking out in hives, eating, eating, eating, grilling, wrestling, and just being a family. It was fantastic. Then I was off to Rome to meet up with Jennifer and Lena for three days. Rome was so full of history, and so full of heat: 46 degrees Celsius! 115 Fahrenheit! We had a blast seeing the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, streets of Italy, Spanish steps, the Trevi fountain, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum just to name a few. In the latter we dressed up in togas, just for fun and wandered the ancient sites of Rome. Some people laughed, others stared and some didn't even know what to do. It was hilarious! When in Rome!!! After Rome, I ventured off on my own too see, to hear, and to be... I decided t go to Venice and Verona. Both were really beautiful and amazing. Venice had such a mysterious beautiful feel to it. It is so amazing, there are no streets, absolutely none. All the streets are water, and it gives the place, although overrun with tourists a feeling of stepping back in time to a world without motors, when water travel was the most practical. Verona was amazingly charming. Romeo and Juliet. Although the story is fictitious there were two feuding families in this city the Monteghellis and the Capulettos, with two star struck love ridden children. There is a balcony, and there is a tomb....so? You'll have to go there and make up your own opinion. Next I was off to the cultural centre of Italy, the Renaissance city of Firenze (Florence), filled with a culture and a way of life in total appreciation for life and art this city bloomed with the the likes of Michelangelo and de Vinci. Michelangelo's David was HUGE!!! It was so large and carved from one piece of marble over 5 years. It was truly amazing every single detail came alive from the veins in his hands to the hollow of his heel. Everything, I read that if you only see one statue in your life that it should be Michelangelo because everything pales in comparison. Pisa, the home of the leaning tower. It really leans! Then I was on a night train to Barcelona. Barcelona was a beautiful city. A little crowded but never the less beautiful. I had fun exploring the gothic quarter, the cathedrals and the boardwalk. And exploring through Güell Park , created by Gaudi it is modern mosaic world intertwined with nature and modern art masterpiece...too hard to explain just amazing. Then I was off the Olympic venues to give my self a pep talk about really committing to swimming. Maybe some day, Athens or Sydney you never know!!! Then I was off to the French Riviera: Nice, Cannes, and Monte Carlo. I met a girl there that I had met in Barcelona and we spent the day together and went swimming in the Mediterranean. Then off to Strasbourg in Eastern France, where my mother was a university student. It was a very nice city, with a wonderful 'ambiance' it was a big city but at the same time felt relaxed and enjoyable. Everyone was tiding bikes, and it was quiet and peaceful. A very beautiful city with canals and old Bavarian/French culture and buildings. And then I was back in Hamburg to recuperate for six days. Ironically my eldest sister Elisha was in Canada at that time, so I had a great opportunity to become better friends, and build up a relationship with my cute little sister Mara. She's my little Spice Girl! Luckily we had some nice weather so I got to teach her some swimming which was fun. I love being a big brother. With only 3 weeks left in Europe Jennifer and I headed down to Greece by train and ferry from Italy. On the ferry ride the sky was so crystal clear it felt like we could see every star in the sky. like the Greek gods were welcoming us to Greece. And then in the morning (IT was a 22 hour ride) and Albanian fighter jet swooped down ten metres away from the boat, no exaggeration ! Later I was talking to another guy from Canada and he said he thought we were going to be bombed and we was wondering which way would be the better way to swim... We got to Greece and a wonderful 8 days. Exploring, camping, hiking, swimming, and meeting wonderful people. Greece was really wonderful I felt like I was in Mexico. IT had that warm friendly at home feeling to it. i loved it. IF there is one place in Europe I would love to go back to it would have to be Greece just because it was so amazing. then Jennifer and I were off to Paris to meet up with Lena and Serena., We had so much fun sneaking all four of us into a hotel room, seeing the Eiffel tower 3 times, and just having a blast!!!We also got locked in a metro station which was pretty scary. We thought we would have to spend a night with the scary tunnel people and rats but luckily Lena found a button that raised the steel fence trapping us inside. We had great food in Paris, mmmmmmmmmmmm! And then I was back in Hamburg to round up my last week with my family. They are so wonderful, it feels like I have two homes now, and I already miss them all. So that was a very short summary of my summer. There are so many more stories that I am sure will pop up from time to time when I am talking to you, and some that won't :) So I hope that all of you are doing great and drop me a note sometime. Enjoy the sun. Mischa peter Isn't it time we had ages with every birthday? wouldn't everyone like to know how old we all are? Is that my latent morbidity or simple curiousity? Shana Tova to the whole mishpacha. Hope everyone is doing well. School has started for me once again, although this is my last year, then I take on the real world head on. Anyhow. first I would like to comment on the amazing homepage which recently I have been visiting more and more- wow! An amazing archive of memories and present happenings who would have dreamed it. Secondly I am calling out to all Nachshens for help. As I mentioned earlier I am getting ready to graduate this year, however before I do I am responsible for turning in a senior thesis, or in my case a senior project. Since I am studying video- I've come up with an idea for a documentary graduate with. The story of my saba- Issie Nachshen. I haven't exactly figured out the angle, or the focus of the piece, but the ideas are slowly and surley coming. I would like to have as much information from everyone in the family as possible, anything is useful right now. If you have ideas or suggestion, or even feedback to this idea please, please, help me out. Either e-mail me or post a response. I am also looking for as much archival information as possible (old videos, films, books, recordings, photos, etc.). I am very excited to undergo this project. Waiting to hear from y'all. Mintzy Friday morning was the brit milah of Thomas Jacob Nachshen. The baby was beautiful - the parents glowing - and the grandparents shepping naches all around. There was plenty of good food and even more good "vibes" and great feeling. Thomas was calm and quiet and he was passed from grandparent to grandparent, aunt to uncle, and finally to Zaida Sam who bravely held him during the ceremony/procedure. Father Gary performed as all Jewish fathers do during the brit - giving the baby wine and trying not to look. And when it was done Thomas slept peacefully while we all doted on him. Mazel Tov!! Issie N Mazal Tov--Sunday,Oct.ll,1998 is the happy day--I wish a Shll could be there...but in spirit,Ihope we are all together. Shalom and love to ALL....Saba Issie. Glenn & Judy
Mazal Tov to the bride and groom and "di gantze mishpocha" from Cousins Judy Hagshi and Glenn J. Nashen. bn Congratulation to Glenn on being re-elected by acclamation to a third term on The City Council of Cote Saint-Luc! Way to go, cousin GJ! Peter it must be told that the renowned Issie Nachshen is Glen's offical campaign agent and no doubt had a lot to do with his re-election. (can you see I.N. with brass knuckles and leather going after the opposition! (joke joke) mazal tov, Glen and Issie saul I've just returned to school after celebrating in my brothers very festive wedding. Thank you to all who could attend. For those who were not there in person, your presence was (as is the case of every Nachshen gathering). It is great to finally have a female presence in Issies grandchildren (let's face it those testosterone levels were just to high). I was also able to capture my zaide in action on video which will make for incredible footage in my senior thesis. Peter mentioned that he has some archival footage which I can't wait to get my hands on. Anyone who can help me out in any way, please, please, contact me, I would be so grateful. In my last announcement my e-mail was wrong but it has since been fixed, so there should be no problems. Take care, and love to all. Rafi Skrizoo Just a reminder for Pesach. This Pesach 1999 is very early and so some family is staying in Florida. However, the first Pesach seder of the Millenium in the year 2000 will also be our 18th annual seder. Please make plans now to attend and make it the biggest super seder yet. All dishes will be Y2K compliant. Rafi Peter all people expecting to be around for Jan 1, 2000 should read up on Y2K. do a net search on Y2K and self-inform yourselves. don't say you weren't alerted. Issie N An alarm is being spread about Y2K...what do we have to do? Eileen You can go to the following website for lots of good information on how to prepare your PC for the Y2K problem: www.ibm.com/year2000 While this is site is somewhat geared to businesses (ie: assumes multiple PC's) there is still lots of good information and links to related sites. It also provides lots more info on IBM PC's, naturally, but you should check your PC manufacturer's website for their information on this issue, as well as to verify the model of PC you have. Once you have the hardware checked out, you need to verify all the software programs you have running, again, a good place to start is the website of the Software companies. Peter Useful suggestions, Eileen. But, The problem has gotten much bigger than individual computers. Altho' gov'ts and big business may have (after spending billions$!!)successfully(?) fixed the 'bug', it's the domino effect of smaller businesses and 3rd world countries which will or may crash the larger computers, even if they are Y2K compliant. The other problem is the millions of 'embedded chips' which cannot be reached to be changed in time. Predicted are problems with water distriubtion systems, transportation, power and energy, phone lines. Too bad the world didn't go Macintosh. Macs do not have the Y2K deficiency. Eileen Y2K You are absolutely right, the problem is potentially huge. My recommendation is that on Jan 1, 2000 (and for a few days after) do not plan to travel anywhere, especially by air, as the air traffic control systems are suspect. The government has already prepared to mobilize armed forces to keep peace in case of complete and total chaos. But the things that we can control (eg: PC's, small home appliances, etc) we should fix ourselves, and all we can do is wait and see for the big systems. Every corporation is aware of the potential problems and has large teams working on the solutions... Peter Eileen is correct, the corporations and 'big' businees will be covered to a great extent..but no one knows how their 'downline' connections to smaller companies and 3rd world countries who can't afford to fix the bug will affect their 'repaired' systems. Ask yourself: what if my heat, water, electricity, and banking machines all stop working on 1/1/00 for 3 weeks or more? Montrealers who survived the ice storm will know best! using the search engine "goto.com" do a search on Y2K and read up. Peter "What do we have to do?" good question. 1st. no one knows how bad things will get, but it's certain there will be problems. Everyone should get informed. Somewhere between what the 'deniers' and the 'catastrophists' are saying, is probably what will happen. Do a net search and read up on what 'experts' are saying. Then look at your living situation to see if you need to take prepatory action re: water, heat, electricity, transportation, food, in case things do get bad in those areas. Remember the Quebec ice storm. I'm no expert, but I'm keeping informed and making some plans. people in cities are likely more vulnerable. share information you acquire. nechama and ari

Mintzy Yup - it's almost that time again! The Clement/Skrzydlo Family & Extended Family Chanuka Party will take place on Friday December 18th. Each person must bring a gift (no more than $10-$15) wrapped in newspaper. Let me know who's coming! Petrushka we're not...but have a latke and a le'chaim with us in mind ... and while we're on the subject of chanuka..readers are encouraged to return to the cook book section of this web page and re-read "The Latke Papers" which cousin Brian so assiduously collected and researched its authenticity for us all to enjoy. hey, how about posting some of the NFC chanuka party pictures when Silka and Elka's kids were all toddlers..who has those? It's still spring/fall here in Montreal-Very-West, alias Thornhill. Any snow up there? Brian It'll soon be time to renew our yearly contract for this message board. The cost has gone up and is around 200 dollars. Last year a number of you eagerly volunteered to contribute the money. (The cost is just for the News & Mail page - not the entire site.) I'm thinking, if some of you are willing to contribute, the money would be better spent moving the entire site to another host server. GeoCities is free but restrictive and includes those horrible popup ads. Moving the site to another server would give me total control over this and also would enable me to design our own message board without the extra cost. Many other things would also be possible. Chat rooms, for example. I hesitate to involve money in this thing but if we're willing to pay for the message board, for a little more we can do a lot more. I'd like you all to respond by posting an anonymous message, letting me know if you're willing to kick in a few bucks. (To post anonymously, just click on POST A RESPONSE below and then leave the top 3 fields (Author, Email, and Subject) blank. I'm looking forward to your thoughts and, in the meantime, I hope you all have a very happy Chanukah, Christmas, any any other holidays you choose to celebrate. Cousin Tzini Noch a non E Mouse.....
Alright already, so here's noch an opinion... I fully approve. But, I still think the old way of posting the NFC News and Mail made it easier to read and likelier to be read (you remember, where ALL mail was visible on the same page, newest to oldest). Although, I've been delinquent in my payment (so impeach me!) I'd kick in just a bis'l mer to ensure our technological advancement. Kadima Mishpacha Nachshon!!! (First one to confess the truth wins a smoked-meat sandwich.) Anonymous actually, looks like a unanimous vote of confidence and go-ahead, to me...so consider it a fait accompli... send the treasurer and invoice and let's get ONLINE in a way that befits the people of the book whose first ancestor was Nachshon ben Aminadav, who had what it took to take the first step into the , as yet undivided, Red Sea. Eileen Check out this web site: http://ucbswww.bank-banque-canada.ca/fastq_English.htm It is a Bank of Canada site that allows you to search for unclaimed bank balances - that is, money forgotten in old bank accounts in Canada. As of the end of November 1998, approximately 770,000 unclaimed balances, worth some $132 million, were on the Bank's books. Amazing! Over 88% of these were under $500 representing 33% of the total value outstanding. The oldest balance dates back to 1900. In the FAQs for this site, it says the Bank of Canada maintains custody of all balances of $500 or more indefinitely, until they are claimed. Unclaimed balances under $500 are retained for 20 years. (10 years from the date of the last owner transaction at the Canadian bank, plus an additional 10 years at the Bank of Canada.) Consequently, in the case of balances under $500, a written claim must be received by the Bank of Canada no later than December 31 of an account's last year (that is, the year of the last transaction date + 20 years). I already looked for NACHSHEN...no luck...but you may find some forgotten money! Brian If I'm rich I certainly don't know it! Judy Hagshi &
Glenn J. Nashen Happy New Year to the Nachshen Family all around the world. Best wishes for health, happiness and prosperity in 1999... Glenn & Judy Montreal tzeener Today's the 40th anniversary of the Cuban revolution. Venceremos, y'all! blintzy Avante Popolo!! Dori Hi everyone!! Happy 1999 to the many cousins i haven't seen yet this year but hope to see soon. Just an update on what's going on with me in TO, I will be graduating in two and a half months! Yippee! In order to graduate I have a thesis project to complete in the next two months. For my project I have chosen to produce and direct an original children's musical "STAR SHINE" that was written by two friends of mine at Camp Shomria. Originally it was written to be an erev (evening performance) for the kids at camp. I wasn't at camp that summer but i saw a videotape of the show and i was blown away. It's a fantastic script. Soooo I believed that the show was so good it should be performed for lots of people, not just the kids at camp who have to see it. So I have spent the last few months raising funds, getting a cast and crew together, booking a venue and basically getting this show on its feet. I've had a lot of help, from many people, my dad, Rafi, created a STAR SHINE website which you are all invited to check out at: www.technologix.ca/starshine.htm (perhaps a link could be created Brian?) The show will be taking place during the last week of March right before Pesach, from the 21st through to the 29th. It is suitable for ages four and up and i promise it will be a terrific show filled with singing, dancing and fun! I would like to personally invite everyone to come and see the show, and definitley check out the website. Ok, this message is long enough, Health and happiness to everyone, Love, Dori Ken Katz At Brandon's bar mitzvah last September, the Katz family resolvedthat we would participate in the next Nachshen family seder, this coming April. To that end, have any plans been made? Could someone provide an update? Clementine I'm glad you've decided to join the NFC seder - and sorry that the Clement family will miss you. Several years ago the out-of-towners decided that since we couldn't all make it to Montreal every year for the NFC seder - we would designate some years as the "BIG" big family seder and would all try to be there for those. This year Uncle Jack will be staying in Florida for Pesach (March is just too cold....) and Mintzy & Rafi and family will be going to BC to celebrate with Peter & Bev and family. However - mark you calendars one and all - Pesach 2000, which will also be the 18th annual NFC seder - will be the superseder. The Clements are planning to be there, as are the California Cranes and many others. We will miss you all this year. Peter is leading a community seder - and we plan to bring the Nachshen spirit and "melody" to the seder there. Sing, laugh, celebrate, remember and enjoy. Mintzy Peter HI cousins, our cousin Issie is in the hospital in Florida. I spoke to him today. I'm sure he wouldn't mind if he got deluged w/ phone calls of good wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. 954 786 6850 is the direct number to his room. Peter more Sat Feb 20 11:25:00 1999 well...what I know is , there is a bleeding ulcer involved, and they're subjecting him to tests, and as far as he knew, they were able to find what it was and treat it. Frankly, I did not get too much into the specifics, but heard from him that he's feeling a lot better than when he was admitted, but as we all know hospitals can be dangerous places. Just talked to Jack (my dad, not your grandson) this morning , who did not know..so I think the more people who know, the better. As Avrum used to say, we got to let family know good news as well as bad. Brian Re: more Sat Feb 20 22:11:37 1999 Thanks, Peter. Glenn I saw IN yesterday.. Mon Mar 1 15:26:25 1999 ...and he's great. I visited Issie when he was in the hospital and went for dinner with him this past Saturday night and Sunday we had bruch at the Rascal House in Boca. He looks good. He has lost some weight (which is not bad for a Nachshen)and his sense of humour is still 10 on 10. He's driving and keeping busy with his friends at Century Village as well as with my parents (Phyllis & George)and with Liz (Aunt Bes) and Bob. He asked that I send everyone his warmest wishes and appreciation for all of the calls and notes he received. Issie returns to Montreal (and his email) in about 2 weeks. There are a couple of areas containing information that we might not want to have accessible to just anyone. Mike Nachshen pointed this out a while ago. So only family members will have access via a password which will be included in the email. Any time someone forgets the password they can write to me. Now that we own our own house we can do what we want. (There are other features that I'll dream up from time to time.) Go to the new News page from the home page of the new site. Or click here.
