• If it worked alright, I just registered to be reachable via e-mail at the above address!
Back home a week after a fascinating trip to Beijing, I'm here to report the good news that Jerry and Bonnie were married on Friday, October 29 with Bonnie's mother and me standing in as witnesses. We had a really happy day filled with champagne, flowers and laughter. That evening we were joined by Bonnie's daughter, aunt and cousin and travelled in a stretch limo to enjoy a fabulous meal in a French restaurant. Join me in wishing the newlyweds continued happiness in their life together.
On the first leg of my trip Jerry, Bonnie and I joined Ronnie, her friend, Dallas, Peter and Bev and Philip for brunch. We shared warm hugs and, here too, lots of laughter.
The next day Jerry and I visited with Brian and Barbara along the sea wall.
It was great to see you all. I miss you already and look forward to Pesach.
See you on the web!

• We have two people born on Zaida Moishe's birthday.
Moishe's great-great-grandson Saul was born on Zaida's 104th birthday, and Moishe's great-grandson Stephen was born on Zaida's 106th birthday. Bobbe Sarah's birthday was 5 days earlier.

a few years ago I heard this story from an old Rabbi in Montreal who had a number of stories of Zaida..one about the chief Rabbi of Montreal going to visit the Boyaner rebbe and when he told him he was from Montreal, the great Rebbe immediately sent back his regards and love to Zaida Moishe.

• Okay - so we know that Gary was born December 1959, and we know that Nechama left for Israel in December 1959 - but we also know that Nechama first lived on Kibbutz Hazorea and didn't move to HaOgen until 1965! So are we missing something?

• I was in Israel from October 11 to October 18. It was my first trip there. I spent the first 4 days in Eilat, the site of the International Fiscal Association annual congress on the latest developments in international tax law. (I know, I know, you're kicking yourself for missing that big event.) After that, I spent a few days touring Masada, the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem.

I will spare you the sightseeing details and go straight to an account of my last day in the country, which was devoted to "family matters". First, I had breakfast with Gerald Nachshen of the Zhitomir/London Nachshens, who is now living in Israel. I will send you a copy of one of the photos we took together. Other than our respective beards, it was pretty difficult to spot any family resemblance, but we each agreed to keep working on finding that elusive genealogical link.

Then I visited the yeshiva of the Boyaner rebbe, the Hassidic leader of whom Zaide Moishe was an adherent. Issie was kind enough to provide me with copies of Zaida Moishe's and Bubby Sarah's Yirzeit notices from the yeshiva, and when I flashed them at the entrance I got a royal welcome. I met a rabbi at the yeshiva, Rabbi Schlesinger, who remembered Zaida Moishe very well from his visits to the movement's other yeshiva in New York. It was very heartening to see, 30 years after his departure, that Zaida Moishe's name still carries a lot of weight in the right circles. In any case, it turns out that the Boyaner movement has a branch in Toronto, so one of these days I will see if I can get in touch with them and try and restore at least a thread of the old connection.

Finally, I met Boris and Lida, our Kishinev cousins, and they spent most of the day driving me around half the country. We visited the Soreq cave, Caesarea, Jaffa, and many places in between, and had a wonderful time together. I'll send some photos of them, too.

Gary

• A gut yontif (belated) to all, and happy birthday to the semptember babies... I am currently in Vancouver casing the joint for a (hopefully) not to far in the future return of our family to Canadian shores. Gabi, Elisha and Mara are keeping the home fires burning, and Mischa is swimming as fast as he can (and that's fast!) at his first year at Queens U. in Kingston Ont. Yes, this is my first entry ever on our web page (I told youBrian not to give up on me!) -- just didn't want to rush into things. My Vancouver tel# 604 301 0047. love Philip

• Yes, it's great that Frankie and Al have offered to do this but (no offence, guys) these are old movies, probably quite fragile, and a pro lab can do whatever restoration is necessary. Whatever the cost, it's more than worth it. These movies are priceless.
Peter, how much is there? I'll contact some labs and try to get an estimate.

• First, shana tova to everyone everywhere!
Jerry and I have been eager for many years to see and, more recently, to transfer to video Jack Clement's film of Max and Myra's wedding. Our mother is part of the wedding party and since there are so few photos of her, the film is especially precious to us. Of course, we would be happy to share in any expense.
I will be in Vancouver October 16 - 18 on my way to a holiday in Beijing and look forward to a visit with Brian and Barbara, Ronnie and Melanie and anyone else by chance in the general vicinity.

• Cousin Peter has a collection of home movies of the family that becomes more of a treasure with every passing year. It's a fragile treasure (film fades and disintegrates with time) and one that should be preserved and shared with the whole family.
Peter and I have talked many times about transfering the film to video. Now we have the means to transfer the film to CD-ROM or laserdisc or whatever the latest technology is (I'm having trouble keeping up), which is even better than video. The entire collection could probably be put on a single CD.
I have no idea what this would cost. It's expensive, I'm sure. But once it's done copies cost practically nothing. If we all shared the cost of the transfer it would probably not amount to much for each family and we could all have copies. I could even put some of it on the family web site.
Let's have some feedback on this idea.

• Well, the generations carry on. Rachel, our daughter who is at York U. had a delightful dinner at Mintzy's in Thornhill where Jack Clement was present and he sent regards to my mother Freda. I think Jack and Freda are the only ones remaining of that generation and my Mum mentioned today that she gave Tanya a maternity dress to wear during one of her pregnancies and when Philip and Peter came around, Tanya credited it to the dress which my Mum wore when Lenny and I were en vntre (in the womb).

• Well, the story goes like this.
Ian came to visit for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks he decided to stay a little longer.
Now for the good stuff. He went to visit Silka and Al in Paradise Falls a week after he was supposed to have left, and lo and behold it WAS Paradise. Toby Goodman, a good friend of Mandi was also visiting, and that was life as they knew it for both Tobi and Ian. The shiduch was made, Ian is now staying permanently in Montreal. The reason of course, is that they are now engaged and planning to get married within the year.

• Well, things get even more interesting, now that I have seen the message from Bernie Nachshen. Again, where did his family come from, exactly which town near Kiev?
How's this for a coincidence.
My father is David Nachshen. His father was called Maurice (Moshe). Maurice's father was called Zvi/Harris/Hirsch Nachshen. Zvi Nachshen was married to a lady called CLARA !! They lived in a town called Zhitomir (near Kiev). They left Zhitomir around 1904 and settled in London (UK).
Bernie, can you give us any more information concerning you Nachshen lineage ?
Thanks - Gerald

We are still looking for some family connection and would like any more information that is available.
Perhaps you could forward Allan's email address. I do not have access to the database.

• I found out about the Nachshen website through your cousin Mike.
It is incredible to see our last name affiliated with a website. In the U.S. our last name has always been unique with nothing even close. This is my first contact with a Nachshen outside of our family.
My grandparents were from the Ukraine...a small town outside of Kiev. His name was Edel Nachshen and my grandmother's was Clara Nachshen
My grandfather came to NYC in 1912 leaving my grandmother and 2 sons (one of which was my father, Louis) behind until he could save enough money to bring them over. They were reunited in 1922 and lived in the Bronx.
Is there anyway in which I could participate in the Nachshen Website? I could scan and forward pictures of my grandparents to you and provide information about the Nachshens in the U.S.
About myself...I'm a consultant in the computer systems business and graduated the City College of New York in 1966.

Thanks to you all, cousins and brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews and Uncle Jack and all my uncles and aunts and Bobehs and Zaides who'll be celebrating Dominion Day and my birthday in heaven, for a great 55 years in a great family. And most of all thanks to my parents, Polly and Jack, for many, many things but especially for making sure I was born on a national holiday so that I always had the day off, whether I had a job or not. (Except for one year at the post office when I had to work but at least got double-time for the holiday!) On top of it being a holiday we also have a major jazz festival here every year for ten days surrounding July 1st so I also get to have a ball partying and dancing and hearing tons of great music for ten solid days - a hell of a birthday party and I wish you could all come

• I was really shocked to find your site. My great grandfather was Menasher Nachshen. Three of his sons came to America--one went back to Europe. My grandfather William (Tzivel) and his brother Morris were the two who stayed. They settled in Wisconson, and changed their surname to Stein. I was told that others in the family settled in the Boston area and changed their surnames to either Nash or Nasher. I have more information. Let me know if you are interested.

• Hello to all the cousins of the Nachshen Family Circle.
This is your annoying NFC treasurer. It has been over 2 years since we have had to ask for money - but the pushka has run dry, and our expenses have gone up. So once again, we are calling on everyone to pitch in. Here's what we spend the money on:
$100 Stamps for one year (no charge for paper or toner for printing of cards)
$300 Picnic costs for one year
$500?? We want to print new haggadot for the 18th annual NFC Seder
$300 NFC Website for one year (remember how you all said you'd chip in so that we wouldn't have to see those annoying commercial announcements. . . . And now our website address is WWW.NACHSHEN.COM - how's that for cool. . . )
And besides that - Brian spends an awful lot on upkeep for the website and internet hours. If we raise enough money maybe we can pay for part of his internet time.
So, here's what we need.

• Hi everyone -- long 2 weeks -- thousands of Kosovar refugees have come through McGuire. Watching them get off the plane is truly an emotional experience -- they have the same look on their faces that our great great grandparent's must've had when they escaped the pogroms in Europe. Spent much of yesterday in the refugee compound playing soccer with the kids -- what fun -- they are so friendly, and are learning english like you wouldn't believe. Still, some of the smaller ones are still afraid of people in uniform.
Anyway, love from Debbie and me -- we are both burnt out, and are looking forward to a short vacation in Lancaster, PA

• AS Brian memtioned, when I was in Vancouver last Thursday, April 29, it was spring. Brian and I caught up after 40 years at the beach at English Bay, watching a magnificent sun set over the water. It was warm, not a cloud. But all that changed on Saturday and Sunday at Whistler in deep snow and fog and some wind but who cares, the skiing was sensational, as it usually is there.
We seemed to have skipped spring in Ottawa and moved right into sumer with hot dry weather these last 4 days. Supposed to cloud over and rain, just when the weekend rolls around. Must be a Liberal plot.

• Spring hasn't sprung in BC, yet. Except for a few days here and there, it's been cold, wet, and windy as hell. I'll never be smug about our semi-tropical climate again. (Unless you have another ice storm back east.)
I won't be doing much planting, that's for sure. But Barbara has a fabulous flower garden. Several, in fact. A regular botanical paradise. She did her spring planting and headed off for a month in Italy with her daughter, Sarah. Meanwhile, I'm saved from loneliness by Johanna and the kids who are in Vancouver for FOUR WEEKS!!! and I'm having the time of my life with them. Sasha's four now, Jack two. Never had so much fun in my life. They are a delight!
Kenny Katz was here about a week ago and it was great seeing him again after something like 40 years!
By the way, I'm planning on being at the next family seder. Johanna and family are also looking forward to being there. If I can manage it I'd like to go to Montreal this fall, too. And New York

• Ah, spring is springing the grass has riz.
Rafi and I are planting our veggies and watching the sprouts sprouting. This year we're trying some new stuff - asparagus (which they tell me will take 3 years till the first harvest) and artichokes. Life is good, we go check the garden every morning to see what's new. If you're in the area come visit.
Happy springing.

• Hey -- just got back from Saul's graduation -- had a great time seeing friends and family, watching my baby brother's feature film, and seeing him get his sheepskin.
Keeping busy here in central NJ -- expecting visitors from Kosovo next week -- stay tuned to CNN (you may catch a glimpse of me in the background). Glad to be able to lend a hand.
Love to everyone from Debbie and me

• I'm sitting here and laughing and crying at the same time. The Pesach pictures are amazing. They brought me home when I couldn't be there. Are those children really the ones I met when I was there last? I didn't recognize them, except to find them in photos with their parents (a little Sherlock detective work was needed!) My god, they are growing! How come we expect kids to look the same as the last time we saw them?
Tzini - you are continuing to do a wonderful job. It's been a while since I've visited, and I'm glad to be home again.
Love you all.
RRR

• Dear Nachshen family - the new site is good. Has anyone done any further research on the Nachshen Canada/UK connection via Zhitomir?
Have a great Pesach and do look us up if you travel to the UK.

• I'd like to add information about Grisha's wife, Mildred, to the family database but even though I remember her and her daughter Gay (and their cat Igor) fondly, I know almost nothing about them. Can anyone help? Our New York cousins could help but I don't think they've got internet access. Maybe someone could contact them if need be.

• Opening night was a resounding success!!
Monday night was the opening of StarShine - Dori's children's musical which is being held at the Poor Alex Theatre in downtown Toronto. Absolutely fantastic. The kids love it - the music, the acting, the singing, the sets, the costumes, the lighting, the everything is suberb. If you are in the area and haven't yet seen the show - it's still on - check out the web-site for times. If you're not in the area - and you missed the show - who knows. . . maybe it'll go on tour.
Congratulations to Dori for a phenomenal job - hard work and well done. Kol Hakavod!!

• Welcome home, Issie. We missed you.
I'd like to say that many have thanked me for this web site but, really, the biggest thanks should go to Issie who wrote so much wonderful stuff over the years. His tribute to Zaide Moishe, his eloquent eulogies to our beloved elders, and his accounts of family gatherings, etc., are what gives this place meaning and soul and will touch the hearts of future generations who will read his words.
Thank you, Cousin Issie!!! (C'mon, everyone - give Issie a big kiss.)

• From Gary:
. . . some important family milestones we will be celebrating this year.
First, 1999 is the 80th anniversary of the Nachshen family's departure from Pogrebishche (we got out while the getting was good after the pogrom of August in that year). And on a more positive note, 1999 is the 75th anniversary of the family's arrival in Canada. That's right - the good ship Madonna, with Jack Nachshen on board, docked in Halifax on May 29, 1924, and he arrived in Montreal by train a day or two later.

• Congrats to the NFC webmaster! Zaida Moishe would be very proud surfing to this site. You've done an amazing job to keep this family united in every corner of the world. Sort of a virtual ingathering of the exiles! Keep up the super work which is greatly appreciated (and the envy of many, many other families that have visited this site).
Nearly 100 years since our grandparents and great-grandparents began their journey to a new world, their children are still ONE BIG FAMILY CIRCLE. Mazal Tov!!!

• Mazel Tov to the webmaster on a fabulous job! As a reward, do you want a smoked meat sandwich from Schwartz's or a hamburger and Suzie Q's from Mr. Steer?
Seriously, everything looks great, and I hope we get a lot of input from that long list of family email addresses.
I want to report on an NFC dinner in Florida last month. Present were Issie, Jack and his friend Judy, Bess and Bob, Silka and Al, Larry and Margaret, George and Phyllis, Phyllis' brother and sister-in-law, and Anne and Sam. Pretty good turn-out, don't you think? It was great to see everyone relaxed and on holiday and enjoying the sunny weather. Lots of good food, and laughs and catching up.
Now that we have this great new web-site all to ourselves with no advertisements, lets fill it up and keep up to date on all the family news!
